Dentist treating a patient’s tooth with a dental instrument

A filling repairs a tooth that has been damaged by decay, a small crack or wear. Treating a cavity early keeps the repair small and helps you avoid pain, infection and more involved treatment later.

Signs you may need a filling

  • Sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold food and drink.
  • A dark spot, hole or rough edge you can feel with your tongue.
  • Food catching between two teeth.
  • A chipped tooth or an old filling that has cracked or fallen out.

Early decay often causes no symptoms at all, which is why regular check-ups and X-rays matter.

What happens during treatment

The area is usually numbed with a local anaesthetic so you stay comfortable. The dentist removes the decayed or damaged part of the tooth, cleans it, and fills it with a restorative material shaped to fit your bite. Most fillings are completed in a single visit.

Aftercare

Your lip and tongue may stay numb for a few hours, so take care not to bite them. Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal. If your bite feels high or the sensitivity gets worse, call the clinic so the filling can be adjusted.
